The 84th Academy Awards (Oscars) will be held on 26 February 2012, the closing date for registration of Best Foreign Language Film is 1 October 2011, 24 films from different countries had already registered which includes Lebanon film Where Do We Go Now? which was recently awarded Toronto International Film Festival’s Peoples Choice award and Taiwan’s Seediq Bale. Mainland China films which normally aims at the Oscars had not announced any nominations.
With regards to whether any Hong Kong films having a go at the Oscars, the reporter had contacted Hong Kong Motion Picture Production Association chairman Hung Cho-sing, it’s understand that film distributors had sent their films to the association, they will form a 11 members committee to select the films that will represent Hong Kong, the films that expressed their intention of registering includes Lau Ching Wan’s Overheard 2 and Deanie Ip’s A Simple Life, the decision will be made within these few days.
Update from Ming Pao: Deanie Ip and Andy Lau’s A Simple Life had been recommended by Hong Kong Motion Picture Production Association to American Film Institute to represent Hong Kong for 84th Academy Awards’s Best Foreign Language Film. American Film Institute will arrange a preview screening next month, the nomination list will be announced early next year.
