Hong Kong Films Awards (HKFA) will be held in April 2012 and the nomination list will be announced in February 2012. Recently film companies had already started preparing to register their films. Ann Hui’s A Simple Life, Jiang Wen’s Let Bullets Fly, Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s Overheard 2, Johnnie To’s Life Without Principle had stated their intention to register. Venice Film Festival Best Actress Deanie Ip can be considered as hot favorite for HKFA’s Best Actress, but for the Best Actor, it would be a fight between five actors Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Andy Lau, Lau Ching Wan and Nicholas Tse, surely it will be a tough fight.
Initially A Simple Life planned to open in cinema in March 2012, however the film need to fulfill the registration requirement of a minimum of 5 screenings within this year thus Bona Films decided that it will have one screening each day for seven consecutive days in City Plaza’s cinema for a quick preview for audience.
Other than A Simple Life to be screened in advance, it is said that Derek Tung’s The Great Magician which starred Tony Leung, Lau Ching Wan and Zhou Xun scheduled for screening in January has planned to find a cinema for five screenings, if it does not screen in advance it could only be registered for 2013’s HKFA. Other films that had registered includes Benny Chan’s Shaolin which starred Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse and Fan Bingbing; Chow Yun Fat, Ge You and Jiang Wen’s Let’s Bullets Fly; Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s Overheard 2 which starred Lau Ching Wan, Daniel Wu and Louis Koo; Andrew Lau’s A Beautiful Life starring Shu Qi and Liu Ye; Johnnie To’s Life Without Principle which starred Lau Ching Wan and Denise Ho. The competing films are stronger compared to last year. The actresses to be registered for the Best Actress award would includes Zhou Xun, Shu Qi, Carina Lau and Fan Bingbing but insiders had tipped Venice Film Festival Best Actress Deanie Ip to standout without much contest.
Meanwhile for the Best Actor, it will be another tough fight between Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung, Lau Ching Wan, Andy Lau and Nicholas Tse, it’s a rare sight of so many former Best Actors registering for the award in recent years, other competitors would includes Daniel Wu and Louis Koo of Overheard 2, you also could not missed out the chances of Mainland China actors Ge You and Jiang Wen of Let’s Bullet Fly as they also stand a chance for the award, thus there will be a tough fight to be nominated.
In addition, Hong Kong Film Archive and experienced film critics had picked 100 films between 1916 and 1999 that you must watch, HKFA Best Director hot favorite Ann Hui had four films which includes The Secret, Boat People, Coincidentally and The Romance of Book & Sword, Chow Yun Fat’s A Better Tomorrow and An Autumn’s Tale were on the list.
